Our Mission
Where arts and education connect! The academy shall provide stimulating learning experiences in which students can become confident, self-directed, creative problem solvers, team players, effective communicators and good citizens.
Our Goal To educate students from diverse backgrounds who have an interest in visual and performing arts, and cultivate their knowledge and skills for the betterment of their local and global community. The arts are a vital part of a holistic education and there is a growing body of research that shows a strong correlation between arts learning and increased learning in other subjects such as math and reading. Furthermore, learning in and through the arts prepares our children to be vital members of the 21st century workforce not only as artists and musicians, but more importantly as thinkers, team member and individuals who are as dedicated as they are passionate. Instruction is designed to strengthen language development, develop critical thinking skills, promote literacy and improve learning outcomes overall. Students work individually, in pairs or small groups students develop community-building skills, including cooperation and patience, effective verbal skills and confidence, as well as the capacity to trust their own creative instincts. Most importantly, children and youth who participate in our programs see themselves as capable of reaching goals and improving their self esteem.
Our History
The Phoenix Park Visual and Performing Arts Academy opened its doors in November, 2011 as a part of the Phoenix Park Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Center After School Program. This program was launched based on a demand and need within the community for a quality, impactful and engaging Visual and Performing Arts Program for kids. Initially, the students in this underprivileged housing development demonstrated a unique and special gift for singing, and was offered a choir class in October, 2009. Since its conception, the 35-voice, multicultural choir, that made their first debut at a community Holiday Celebration has now evolved into a Visual and Performing Arts Academy that service approximately 80-100 elementary school students each week by offering the following classes:

1. Social Etiquette (Girls)
2. Social Etiquette (Boys)
3. Choir (75 voices)
4. Tap Dance
5. Hip Hop Dance
6. Hmong Dance
7. African Dance

8. Island Dance
9. Interpretive/Ballet Dance
10. Step
11. Music Theater/Drama

TAP

The rhythm and movement of tap, created by the metal taps on the heels and toes of a dancer’s shoes, transforms the dancer into a percussive musician. Students are taught rhythms, timing, and leg/foot coordination done to various types of music. We teach all types of tap from standard basics like “Singing in the Rain” to funky rhythm tap as seen in “Bring In Da Noise.”
